How Long Does Hardwood Floor Refinishing Take?

Two clocks: working time and cure time
Working time is how long the crew is in your house, and cure time is how long the finish needs before it can handle normal life. They are not the same; finish makers publish cure times on their data sheets, and those numbers change by product.
As an example, one two-part waterborne finish lists about two to three hours to dry and about three days to full cure (Bona raw-wood sheet) and (Bona data sheet). Another data sheet says furniture can be carefully moved back after three days, and area rugs should wait until the floor is fully cured (Bona anti-slip sheet).
| Stage | What happens | Example timing |
|---|---|---|
| Sanding | Old finish comes off, wood is smoothed | Depends on size, set at the visit |
| Stain, if used | Color goes on and dries | Per the stain's sheet |
| Coats | Finish rolled on, dried between coats | About 2 to 3 hours between coats for one product |
| Light use | Socks only, no furniture | After the product's dry time |
| Furniture back | Carefully, with pads | About 3 days for one product |
| Rugs | Wait for full cure | About 3 days or longer by product |
How to plan your week
- Ask for the exact finish name so you can read its sheet.
- Plan a place for pets while the floor dries.
- Keep shoes off until the cure window ends.
- Do not shove furniture back, lift it.

Does weather matter?
It can, and indoor air that is too humid or too dry changes how floors behave, and NWFA suggests 30 to 50 percent humidity (NWFA). In a Madison winter, with the heat on, we watch the humidity; see Madison humidity and floors, and for the full job, read our preparation guide.
